This work consists of two chapters, introduction, conclusion, bibliography and four appendices.
Chapter I presents the theoretical part of the research. It introduces the linguostylistic features of political communication. It describes the peculiarities of the oratorical style.
Chapter II presents the practical part of the research. It examines the personality of Barack Obama and focuses on the usage of phonetic, morphological, lexical and syntactical stylistic devices in his speeches.
Bibliography includes books and articles by both Russian and foreign scholars which are used as a theoretical basis for this paper. There are many remarkable authors. For instance, a notable linguist Ilya Romanovich Galperin distinguished the most characteristic features of the language styles. Bruce E. Gronbeck compared rhetorics with politics. Jonathan Charteris-Black analyses the rhetoric of speeches by major British or American politicians. Christina Sch?ffner examined political discourse analysis. These are innovative studies of interest to students and researchers in discourse analysis and political communication.
Appendices contain the original speeches as a material for analysing in the practical part of this work.
The material for the analysis in the practical part of this work is taken from the speeches by Barack Obama. The first speech is Remarks by the President at Grassroots Event for Senate Candidate Robin Carnahan. The second speech is Remarks by the President at Fundraiser Event for Senator Harry Reid. The third speech is Remarks by the President on Behalf of Alexi Giannoulias. And the last, fourth, speech is Remarks by the President at DCCC Finance Event.
This diploma paper is meant to be the starting point of a larger research in Barack Obama’s individual public speaking style and may be useful for linguists, teachers and students of English in the course of stylistics, translation studies, interpretation of a text or aiming to succeed in public speaking.
